2017 Toyota 86 Named Best Sports Car
Sports cars and value don’t usually go together, but the Toyota 86 is an exception to that rule, and an exceptionally fun one at that. Formerly known as the Scion FR-S, this 2-door coupe brings an injection of excitement to the parent Toyota brand after it wound down its Scion unit.
While this compact sports car has a new name, its objective remains: Provide a sports-car experience at a price within reach of ordinary buyers. Developed with Subaru (the 86 is a twin to the BRZ), this Toyota packs a 2.0-liter flat-4 engine that drives the rear wheels. In an age when even cars that call themselves sporty are front-wheel drive, the 86’s rear-wheel-drive configuration alone gives it an edge, but it’s hardly the only trait that appeals to driving enthusiasts.
