Highlander Wins Top Safety Honours
The 2016 Toyota Highlander has earned the Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS, or the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. In 2016 only two other midsize SUVs have managed to earn the coveted award so far – the Honda Pilot and the Nissan Murano.
The Highlander also earned the award last year, but it’s worth noting that the testing criteria for 2016 is considerably stricter. A vehicle has to score a Good, the top available rating, or all five crash tests. Knowing that the criteria was going to be more stringent, in order to achieve this top award for 2016 Toyota made some modifications to the Highlander in order to improve performance and safety. In the 2015 model testing the crash dummy’s head slid off the airbag during front end collision simulations. In 2016, the dummy’s position was better controlled, and the head hit the front airbag.
In addition, the 2016 Toyota Highlander scored Advanced in optional front crash prevention technology, which is also a top consideration in rating vehicles for the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award.
